760 Turbo cold won't start

My 1986 760 Turbo, which I bought and got back on the road this year, won't start now that it's cold. With the temperature around freezing, or a little below, it will crank and almost catch. It acts like the timing is off and the engine just won't quite start. It will crank and start to rotate faster, but not fast enough to run. After trying to start the car, without touching the gas pedal, it smells of gasoline.
