My newly purchased 240 wagon, will not shift into overdrive. I have had the relay, solenoid, and wiring replaced. The light on dash works fine, and all else with the transmission seems normal, new fluid recently, had the rear seal and bearing checked, all seemed fine.

I am not much of a mechanic, and only slightly knowledge about automotive repairs. It was suggested that I have a used transmission installed; the local Volvo shop I have been going to has a very good reputation.

My questions are as follows:

From what little I have learned from the web and others is that the overdrive can be rebuilt. Is this true, and what is the likelihood that rebuilding will correct the problem?

Why used? What could be the price differential between used and rebuilt?

I am leaning toward taking it to the dealer, or a dedicated transmission shop. I figure the dealer is better suited for installing a rebuilt, or even overhauling the existing.

The dedicated transmission shop, will no doubt offer warranty.

From all that I have read, the 240 has a very durable transmission.

Your insight, or advice will be greatly appreciated.

By the way, the wagon has 145K. It has been very well maintained most service records in onwers manual, dealer cared for most of its life.
