me and my dad are volvo mechanics so of course we've seen some odd things happen to volvo's, but this one is right up there in the "most clueless owner list".
about 7 years ago our neighbor had a 1987 245, he said it had a oil leak which he described as bad. he was told by a gas station worker(this was his first mistake) to "add a little oil every once in a while" I guess he heard "add a quart of oil every time you put gas in it".
he was already hard on his car: it was almost like an alarm clock; every morning around 6:00am during the winter (about 32F-0F degrees) he would start his 240 up, and then place the heaviest block he could on the accellerator, and walk inside and wait for the car to warm up.the poor 240 would sit out there running at 2000-4000 rpms for about 15 minutes, so when he came over one morning saying it wouldn't start it didn't surprize us.
we walked over there expecting to see a connecting rod that had decided to relocate itself to the outside of the block, but thats not what we found at all.
And then we checked the oil.
we looked at the dipstick in udder disbelief.. the oil was 3/4 of the way up the entire dipstick.
we didn't belive it, so we decided to change the oil.
our oil catch pan could hold about 1 gallon of oil, so we let the oil out, and when our catch pan filled up the first time there was still a strong flow of oil coming out, so we emptied the catch pan and repeated this until we had remove an unblievable 5 gallons of oil from that b230 4 cylinder engine.
how did he let it go that far you ask?
the gas station worker didn't tell him how to check the oil, so for about 6 months he would add a quart of oil every time he put gas in it without even knowing that he was supposed to check the oil, or even how to!
