91 740 WAGON GAS GUAGE NOT WORKING 700

I just got a 91 745 and the PO mentioned that the gas guage has a mind of it's own. When i went to get it Sunday it was reading 1/4 tank but was out of gas and didnt start. Now it's reading half a tank, and i just filled the tank. I know on most cars the sending unit is usually responsible for this but my chiltons manual didn't really tell me if that would fix the gas guage problem. What do i need to do to get this fixed? All help is appreciated!
