After all, the in-tank fuel pump was toast (walk in the park) but more importantly the sending unit had perforated due to rust, causing unseen leaks. Bad in-tank fuel pump + sending unit sucking air = not enough fuel pressure at the manifold.
So off to this little hole in the wall shop to have the sending unit sandblasted and soldered to death. Then add a new in-tank pump, sock, main fuel filter and a few other sundry items and magically we have a car that fires right up.
Gotta build myself a fuel pressure tester....
