I am in the process of obtaining a 1970 Volvo 164 Automatic. I know the history of the car dating back a little over twenty years. It will need a major mechanical overhaul and I was considering converting to a manual gearbox at that time. I have heard scattered reports of syncromesh wear problems and bearing problems on the M410s. Can anyone give some insight into these? I recently found a complete (although in poor condition) '71 164 with the M410. I know the car has been parked for a little over ten years outside due to a carb fire. The engine is still loose and will turn over with the starter. I have moved the car about a car-length with the starter in 1st gear. Is there any way I can get a good idea of the condition the gearbox is in WITHOUT removing the 'box from the car? What is the probability that I would end up with a good used gearbox? I don't recall the exact milage, but it would be safe to assume at least 150k. Is there anything I should watch out for in regards to clutch/overdrive/driveline?
Any help would be much appreciated.
