Loss of Horsepower/torque/lower gear 120-130

Problem:

I've lost horsepower in lower gear. In first gear it needs a crawling 25 yards before it picks up any power and then i cant accelerate to high (past mid level before wanes (carbs increase mix it no engine torque).

Factors:
Ignition
I changed the spark plugs with right gap (did it two to three times).
Put in new points and gaped it accurately and set timing by static and strobe.
All according to the excellent posts on brickboard. Followed them all through well.

Carbs:
Adjusted them according to various authorities/direction on brickboard and ohers....seems to be ok.

What could it be?
