I need to replace the headgasket on my '84 242ti. So, I'll need a headgasket, valve cover gasket, copper washers for exhaust manifold and exhaust manifold gasket. Anything else I should replace, look for while I have the head off? I looked at the 700/900 faq for tips. Any thoughts would be appreciated. First time doing anything like this, but I feel confident I can do it based upon other things I have done. Valve train thoughts? I've drained and refilled the oil once to get rid of the water. How many times should I drain and refill?

Here's the story. Picked up a very nice '84 242ti with 231K a month ago. Original owner and service records from day one. Shortly after I got it, came down with pneumonia and no time to look over and take care of some little things. Finally got to drive it a few miles around town and noticed coolant line above turbo was leaking a little and needed tightening.

Number 1 son, 17 years old, offers to put on the new plates while Number 1 wife and I go shopping. Get a call an hour later from 17 year old son saying car has overheated and friend is helping him add coolant. Hmmm, where is number one son? Get another call later from number 1 son saying car is running rough and pouring smoke from the tailpipe. Number 1 son does not have permission to drive car. Would anyone like a 17 year old boy, cheap? (He wonders why he is not allowed to drive the '70 1800E!) Get the 242ti towed home and noticed lots of water in tailpipe. Tell-tell signs of blown headgasket confirmed by chocolate milk on filler cap and dipstick. Drain the oil. Wow! I've never seen green coolant pour from drain for several seconds before transitioning to oil. Replace filter, refill with new oil, and run for a minute. Will drain and refill again tomorrow.
