940, 94 runs at only 10 mph. 900 1994

Hi
This is my first entry to the site. Though I read it quite often. My 1994 940 turbo suddenly developed problem that it hesitate as we press the gas pedal. The engine dies if we press the gas suddenly. If we press the gas slowely the car runs only at 10 mph. The main fuel pump makes the usual sound of running. I opened the return fuel line from the fuel pressure regulator and there is no fuel gushing out while I read in this forum that it should have a steady stream. Please advise the things I should check.
