Ebay tach and voltmeter - help! 200

I bid on a used 52mm voltmeter and tach on ebay this weekend - advertised as "in good condition". Received the gauges yesterday and installed them today. The voltmeter works great, but the tach will not register a signal. I have used the red and white wire behind the instrument cluster and direct wired it to the ignition coil. Nothing. Any suggestions?
