filter box mod/ does it really ever need hot air? 700 1987

I just bought my first Volvo, a 740T SW. And I love it! Much more fun to drive than my 98 Accord. In the course of re-searching common maint. problems, I wondered about the hot air induction valve sticking issue. This seems to be a rather bad achilles heel, an un-nessacary one at that. Many a mass air meter have met their doom, apparantly for no good reason. Like most Americans, I live in a temperate climate (bay area, Cali). I doubt that the air ever gets cold enough to warrant the forced induction of hot air from the engine block into my precious filter box. As such, I plan on ABS welding the flap shut. The risk of a stuck open, hot air intake valve, seems not worth the reward of....well,.... NOTHING! I don't plan on any trips to the Yukon.
Has anyone done this before? Can I just do away with the sensor? Or will that make the CPU nutty? As long as I am mucking about with the filter box, any other recommended mods? Thanks y'all. (Im a transplanted southern boy)
