'Check Engine' light 900 1995

We've all seen this, of course, with varying degrees of urgency.

I'm borrowing a 1995 Volvo 960 Wagon, and there was no oil in it...almost. I took care of that, but the Check Engine light still shines. The owner said that it just started doing that recently.

Any thoughts?
