check engine light

I drove my 88 740GLE 450 miles yesterday and in the middle of the trip, the check engine light came on after a pit stop. After a mile or so of driving, it turns off. It has become an ongoing problem now. When I start the car, cold or hot, the check engine light stays on for about the first mile of driving and then goes away. Any ideas?
