Why is the suspension so stiff? 444-544

I have at last returned to an old favorite, the 544.
We have owned 5 of these in the past, driving twin PVs during our early years of marriage (26 and counting).
But I may have forgotten the rough suspension.
The current car seems to throw its rear end into the air at every opportunity.
Any advice or is this "normal"? Or are the shocks too stiff?
