Air Mass Meter 200 1990

My 1990 244 has recently given me the running lean code (2-3-1 if I remember correctly). I also got the code that says the RPM sensor or AMM is bad. How do I go about testing each to figure it out? I would really hate to replace the AMM without knowing it is bad due to cost. Not to mention, even though they are cheap, the RPM sensor looks to be a pain to replace. Thanks for your help, all of you have helped keep my volvos running smooth for a long time.
