90 240 dies on roadtrip... help quick! 200 1990

So my brother just called me and is on his way back to school in Tampa From Louisville KY... south of Atlanta he says his speedo died and then about 2 hours later he stops for food, comes back out and the car wont start. At the moment he is waiting on AAA to come tow him somewhere but Id like your thought on what this might be caused by so he doesnt get screwed being an out of town traveler at the repair shop.
