Anybody know the technical difference between the blue coolant temp sensor and the black one?

The local chain auto store's computer couldn't order the black temp sensor, which is what I think my '89 takes, but they had the blue one in stock and their computer said that it could be used in place of the black one. Is this true? There must be some difference other than the color of the plastic!
