1989 744GL w/ Auto Tans.
PROBLEM: Usually OD is locked out (stuck in 3rd gear) with orange arrow illuminated in cluster. Sometimes OD functions normally; the arrow is then not illuminated.
I take this to mean that the problem is the ELECTRICAL, and NOT the solenoid that is faulty (since if the solenoid signal were correct, but the trans stays in 3rd gear, the orange shift arrow would not be illuminated).
IN OTHER WORDS, if the solenoid IS getting the signal to allow OD, but the solenoid is sticking or clogged (keeping the OD locked out) the orange shift arrow would be off, but the trans would be stuck in 3rd.
I did a search and read about 100 posts, mostly on the 200 Series, and I am looking for confirmation on the assumptions I drew from those posts.
Please correct any misconceptions I may list below and feel free to add any suggestions.
1) I assume it is the AW Trans because it has the "1, 2, D" Shift Quadrant and because it has a push button O.D. switch on the side of the shifter knob.
2) I understand there is an OD solonoid on the left side of the trany that can be reached from under the car. It can be cleaned/replaced/or modified by connecting the ports with a machined groove, which will disable the ability to disable OD (i.e., the trans will always allow OD).
3) I understand there is an OD relay that sometimes fails and which can sometimes be repaired. On the 200, it's behind and to the left of the glove box. Same place in the 700?
4) I understand that the wire from the OD switch passes through the shifter shaft and often frays. Can this be reached from above (with the shifer surround)or only from below?
SHOULD I be able to hear the relay/solonid "click" from inside the car with the engine not running, but with the ignition switch in the "run" position?
Anything else I should check?
Thanks, guys
