Spotless Engine Bay 200

From experience, I've run across 2 schools of thought on keeping the engine bay and the engine itself clean. The first group says leave the engine alone, all that accumulating grease and spilled oil keeps everything lubricated. The other group are obsessive compulsives like myself. All that dirt, grease and grit under there bothers me....alot. I believe engine filth is partly the reason I keep having to replace parts. Wouldn't it be nice to drop a bolt in there and not have to run back inside to clean it off again. Plus, if the engine is caked in grime I can't see all the connections, parts and pieces under there; even with a flashlight. So, I need your input on the benefits or pitfalls to keeping these older volvo engines clean. If there's no benefit then why bother, right? Also, 245 turbo specific tips would be appreciated. On my passat diesel, everything was sealed up pretty good so I could just cover up certain electrical modules/connections, plug the intake then break out the Simple Green, degrease and rinse. On a summer afternoon with the hood open, everything would be clean and dry in 3 hours or less.
