740 Turbo Wagon Transmission 700

I just bought a 1990 740 Turbo Wagon with automatic transmission and 140,000 miles. The transmission is smooth and shifts nicely. It doesn't jerk or gear hunt, just works like I would expect a transmission should.

My question is about maintenance. I don't know when it was last serviced. Is it ok to switch to a synthetic fluid at this many miles? How can I tell if I have an AW30 or AW70 transmission?
