Smokin' Alternator 200 1988

My voltmeter was "in the red" this morning and I had the alternator tested - dead. Got a replacement, hooked all wires up as they were before and when I replaced the negative battery terminal, there was smoke and the ground wire from the engine block to the alternator negative terminal was literally melted. It appears as though the wire was bad prior to replacing the alt and the amps fried it. What could I have possibly done wrong?

My plans are to get a new ground wire and I should be done, right??

Any pointers are appreciated
