My '84 245DL has a broken exhaust pipe where it enters the rear muffler and it's been that way since before Christmas. Couldn't do much about it then. I've gotten used to the way it sounds, which is pretty quiet with just one muffler. My question is for the need of two mufflers with a stock engine. The motor is in great shape (oil consumption is measured in ounces between changes at 3-4k miles) Before I take it to the shop which will custom bend pipes, do I really need the second muffler? I'm from the old school which recommends reducing back pressure on an old engine, but I'm wondering.... I can't imagine Volvo putting the second one on there if it wasn't needed. I'm not trying to boost power and don't care much for the 'wasp' sound that is popular.
Do I really need to buy that extra muffler?
Thanks,
Mark
