Shifting gears without clutch pedal??? 200 1989

I seen a post talking about being able to shift without using the clutch pedal, Now I can't find it, anyhuu, I tried it and it worked in gears 2 thru 5, is there any negatives to doing this? am I extending the life of the clutch? Or am I causing problems to the transmission? I only tried it on my way to and from work tonight.
