Speedo needle jumping, intermittent 700 1986

1986 740 sedan, 177K Mi, Sometimes the speedo needle oscillates about 8 MPH worth. First noticed at a stop light, jumping from 0 to 8 MPH or so. At over 20 MPH, it still is jumping, but range is less. Only happens occasionally. Most of the time the needle is steady, goes to zero when stopped, seems to indicate speed appropriate to rate of scenery passing by. This needle jumping in itself isn't much bother, but maybe it is indicating something worse about to happen? It would be nice to make it right. Any idea what's up?
