The need of a splash pan? 200

Hi friends!

Seeing several posts about splash pan, I'd like to know your opinion about the need of it.
Here, in France, even some Volvo dealers say that there is no need of it in ordinary circumstances (on roads or highways...).
Some say that without it the engine id better refreshed (?..)

On my brick (wagon diesel - 250,000 km), I'm riding without splash pan something like one year ago, and I never got any problem (even rainy days or a little snowing ones...).

Really, what is the use of it?
