Engine was running fine, don't know what's gone wrong! 700 1989

Car had been running great, got off the highway today and car was shaking, won't idle smooth and has a loud tapping noise coming from what sounds like the top of the engine. She's an '89 745 with approximately 334,000 km's. Any suggestions?
