A/C Clutch? 200

Hi
I was driving my 88 240 wagon this weekend when after about two hours it started to make a thumping noise and began to smell like burning rubber. I then heard a screeching sound like a belt was going to break. When I pulled over there was smoke coming from underneath the hood. The car was towed but when the mechanic checked her out he could not find anything wrong. All he came up with was that the A/C clutch may be bad. Has anyone ever had a similar problem?
