I finally got around to rewiring the part of the wire bundle that had turned to cheese over the last twenty years or so. The impetus for this work was the temperature gauge that was reading hard over hot, the sign of a short in the system. Anyways, I replaced the temperature gauge wire completely from the sensor to the grey plug on the firewall.
Now the temperature gauge works but it is underreading, showing between the seven and eight o clock position instead of the former reading of the nine o'clock position.
I suspect I might have partially fried my gauge by driving it for a number of months with the short and I am wondering if anybody else has ever had one of these gauges out and had a look at it. I'd like to know if it has any kind of an adjustment screw on it. If so, I should be able to just adjust the gauge to run at the nine o'clock position. If not, I expect I will have to find another gauge somewhere.
It could be the sensor of course and they are what usually goes kaput on these systems because the gauges are pretty reliable.
Regardless, I could adjust the gauge to the sensor's new output if it has an adjuster on it somewhere. Anybody know for sure?
