AW70 fluid level 200 1988

Hi guys,

you might say that checking AT fluid is very easy, but not in my case. This is my story:

I drive my B230F AW70 up to the normal running temperature, park in the driveway and switch gears thru all positions, PRND212DNRP. Then I go out and pull the dipstick out - it's almost completely dry! I wipe it off with a piece of cloth, insert and withdraw it again. This time, whole plastic part of the dipstick is in ATF. Why? I'm pretty sure that the dipstick was the whole way down before I started checking. And who can tell me if I should add some ATF or not?

One more thing I'd like to ask - if AW70 is low on fluid, what comes first, shifting problems I would be able to feel or transmission damage?

Thanks, IF
