What causes the automatic tranny gearshifter to not lock into Park,, Drive, etc.??? 200 1989

Isn't it dangerous?

On my '89, you can move the shifter from Park into Reverse (Reverse into Neutral, etc.) WITHOUT depressing the shifter pushbutton. It doesn't lock into place good enough. If I shove hard enough, I can get the shifter to "lock" into Park, but...with normal force, it doesn't lock.

Has the transmission moved? I know there is an adjustment for the shift position sensor, but is there a way to adjust the lock pattern device?? It looks like the whole thing is bolted to the chassis or something.

Thanks,
