Fights, then stalls - on the freeway! 700 1988

Hi all,

We own a 1988 Volvo 740 GLE N/A with an automatic transmission. It has nearly 300,000 miles on it and still drives well. However, there is a problem.

We were driving on the freeway at roughly 50 MPH (it was pretty trafficky) and the car started doing something funny: it kept throttling up and down, from about 2000 to 800 RPM while losing speed. Even easing off the accelerator pedal or pushing it further did nothing to stop the erratic throttling until the car stalled - about 15 seconds later.

The odd thing is after about thirty minutes, we were able to start the car and drive it as if nothing had happened. The danger is that this could happen again - and it has happened in the past, but only during sudden acceleration, such as in passing or picking up speed.

Can you fellow owners help us? My dad thinks it might be one of the fuel pumps, though this problem has only occured a few times. I suspect it's either the fuel filter, the air filter, the fuel line, or the computer that's sending the wrong information to the pump - or something along those lines.

What do YOU think?

Thank you in advance for your thoughts! :)
