bad Hall sensor? 200

'88 240 with tach. No start. When cranked, tach does not move. Is this any kind of reliable indication that the problem is with the Hall sensor or connections to it? When the Hall sensor is bad, what mechanism keeps the car from running? I know I have fuel.

Thanks.
