Rear defrost repair... Mine is patchy 200 1989

My rear defrost is only clearing half the window on the back hatch of the Volvo. I have noticed some green corrosion around the outer edges.. I know you can buy little rear defrost repair kits...
How do you figure out where the breaks are and how would you prep the window to apply this stuff? ANyone out there done this repair before? Where do you test the voltage?
