Hi,
My 1989 244 DL (160000 k) just flunked the low speed NOx test, so i am fixing/cleaning some things on the engine. The car passed all the other tests fine, but had almost double the allowable NOx reading at the low (15mph) test.
I cleaned out the Flame Trap because it was not totally cloged but getting that way. Had to use a drill to clear out the fitting on the side (Thanks FAQs!).
I then decided to clean the TB and found it covered it grime and oil. I have tried to attach a picture of it before i cleaned it.
Does this seem normal? There was even gunk/oil inside that flex tube that attaches to the Throttle Body.
I have only had this car a few months, so this is the first time i have had to get it smog checked. The gas mileage is a little disapointing (about 22), but it seems to run great. If any of the experienced Volvo guys out there know what the main cause of high NOx at low speeds is, i would really appreaciate any advice at all.
Thanks,
Ron
