Fuel Pressure battle continued. 1800 1971

Alright, here is an update on the fuel availability battle that I have been waging with my beloved 1800. Last weekend I figured out that the issue was definitely caused by a lack of fuel. I drained the tank this morning hoping to get this resolved finally. Unfortunately, there is just one plug in the top (where the fuel level sender goes) and I was not able to see if the pickup tube area was clogged. How am I supposed to reach that infamous sock filter? On a happy note, the inside of the tank looked very clean. No sludge or anything along the bottom. The drained fuel looked fresh from the spigot as well. No particles or anything else that I could see.

I then jacked up the car to see if there was a way to reach the inside of the tank from down there. Lo and behold, the hose going from the pickup tube outlet to the pump was collapsed. My mechanic must have thought that hose that says "NOT FOR FUEL INJECTION SYSTEMS" would work just fine there. I have to guess that the tube would collapse due to the pump pulling more suck than the tank could provide. If that is the case, I still have a problem with something restricting flow in the tank. Could it also be that the hose just is not up to the task of even providing fuel to the pump, even with no restrictions in the tank? I am planning on hunting down a section of half inch fuel injection hose to swap out tomorrow.

I pose the following queries at this time. When I replace that hose tomorrow, is it safe to just grab a pair of pliers and turn the fitting on the gas tank around 180’. That way it would be facing towards the pump and would eliminate the need for a bend in the hose. What do you guys recommend as a method for checking the pickup tube without being able to get at that portion of the tank from above? Thanks a bunch, I always value your input as I’ve never really worked this in depth on a car before.
