740t, auto, 130k. I have had an intermittent ignition problem since last spring. The engine cuts out abruptly and the ignition usually needs to be turned off for about 30 seconds before it will restart. When it is restarted it usually displays the engine light, the service light, failed bulb light, and sometimes it will kick out of OD and will not go back in for a while. None of those lights are usually on. It always cranks over as normal and has never drained the battery. The computer shows an ignition fault code of 1-4-4. According to the information on this site, this code indicates "no load signal from fuel injection system," which can be caused by a bad fuel injector relay, faulty wiring between the LH and the EZK, or a bad LH module. The LH module has been replaced by the previous owner with a unit from a '93 (or '94?). The fuel injector relay looks very good.
The contacts on the EZK(ignition control computer) are corroded. Cleaning these contacts has sometimes appeared to have solved the problem, but sometimes it does not help. A more thorough inspection and cleaning of other connectors between the two computers may help, but I'm not sure which to start with or where to find them.
The power stage module looks to be in good shape, and the rpm sensor reports no error in test mode 2.
Given that this has been an intermittent problem for almost 10 months now, what components can be eliminated as suspect? Can a power stage module, coil, or any other essential ignition component fail intermittently for this length of time, or is my problem more likely to be an intermittent ground?
Thank you
