I posted several days ago about the whining noise that seemed like belts, but wasn't. Well, I ended up replacing the water pump (a fairly straight forward job) only to find out that the noise was really made up of two noises. One of the noises, the constant whirring is solved by the water pump, but the squeel/whine is still there and after having looked at the timing belt tensioner during the water pump r&r I do believe the tensioner is the cause. The nesioner looks dry and kind of off center from its axle. Hard to describe, but it doesn't look healthy. I did check the harmonic balancer using three lines drawn with white-out and after the wife used the car normally for a day the lines are still alligned. The pulley doesn't look pretty, but I guess it's still in working order.
So, are there any tips for r&r the belt tensioner? It is the 8-valve engine, so nothing fancy there. Looks like a fairly simple job, but those are the ones that usually end up the most complicated. With that in mind, any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
