Fellow Brickers-
I am trying to determine if I can easily import my Euro spec Volvo to the United States. Is there someway to determine if my car is EPA/DOT approved without having to go through some kind of customs broker? Besides the catalytic convertor (which I can buy inexpensively and have installed) are there any differnces between the Euro/Stateside models that lead to EPA/DOT certification? The car has the 4-cylinder 230ET Motronic Turbo with intercooler and M-47 tranmission with 4+OD speeds and the dreaded Nivomat IRS. I have done lots of work on this car in the last year and no one in my current location will give me $2K U.S. for it, which is my asking price. There was almost no maintenance done when I bought the Blue Bomber a year ago for 900 USD. 270K kms on the clock and almost everything works besides the usual: sunroof is balky, fuel gauge doesn't read, and fuel pumps are slowly dying. Is it worth even thinking about doing this? I could drive the car from Turkey (I live in Izmir on the Aegean Sea near Greece) to England and ship it roll-on/roll off for about 1.5K dollars.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what my course of action should be? I would hate to sell it for 1K after putting 4.5K into it. New front suspension, new drive shaft u-joints/bearing/seal, new tires, new brakes including calipers, hoses, master cylinder, pads, disks, shoes, new A/C compressor and both hi/lo pressure lines, new windshield, new squirters, new struts for hood and trunk, new bulbs all around, fixed cig lighter, OD repaired, new clutch disk, new motor and tranny mounts, new filters, and lots of other little things. I had hoped to stay in Turkey for a bit longer (that's another not so long story) but let's just say that traffic here is "challenging/a growth opportunity."
Hope to hear from any of the other Brickboarders who have thought about doing this, or have done so/chosen not to do so. I really like this resource and would appreciate any feedback or advice.
Onwards!
