Ball joint orientation 200 1989

I've been informed that I have the ball joint mounting plates reversed. Currently, the ball joint mounting plates are oriented such that the straight edge is parallel to the front (or leading) edge of the control arm.

To my knowledge, there is no difference between the actual left and/or right joint. Correct?

Also..if the ball joint mounting plates are installed on the wrong side of the vehicle, what effect could this have? Is it dangerous in any way?
Thanks in advance,
Cabbie2169
