240 auto won't shift into last gear, i'm stuck at work 140-160

While driving to work this morning, I noticed that my 1989 240 automatic wagon would not shift into the final gear, sort of like if the o.d. switch were on. The OD indicator light is not on, and when the switch is engaged nothing happens obviously.
I guess I'm hoping that it could possibly have something to do with the OD solenoid or something like that. Transmission fluid level is fine. Am I looking at spending a whole ton of money on the transmission, or possibly no? Plus, I'm 20 miles from home.
