Knocking noise from one strut ? 200 1993

When lightly pushing the car up & down I can hear a knock coming from the left strut tower.
This noise is only on the left and not the right side strut.
It is a very audible metallic clunk sounding like something is loose.
With the top cap off I can not see any sign of movement or slop and the top strut attachment bolt is tight.
Any idea what causes this and can it be dangerous?
