Fuel Vapor Cannister...Required?? 700

Good Evening, and thanks in advance for all of your thoughts and answers.

The car- '87 760 Turbo wagon 121k good shape.

The problem/question...

my fuel vapor containment unit(6 inch round black plastic "can" with feed from fuel tank and leads to throttle body)
...just had the bottom of the "can" fall off !

I did recover the bottom with a short 12" +/- hose...no idea what,if anything it goes to(suspect,nothing simply a vent hose -post charcoal filtering? or for overpressure?)

anyway, besides the EPA, does my Volvo care if this item is included along with its many decayed leak prone hoses in it's fine engine bay?

If nothing else it seems that the fumes might
a)clog the ports at the throttle body, or
b) offer vaccum leak opportunities...

So what would you do? get a new one and hoses (and pay shudder $$$)? or remove it?

If the brickboard says out with it...waht should we do with the fuel vapor feed hose? or will some unthought disaster arise with removal?

opinions?

PS- no smog testing in my area...but do expect to see equipment if something is missing...like the catalytic, or when I removed my driving/fog lights but left the mounts w/o lamps- did not pass inspection! But, removed the mounts and the same people said now it can pass!
