Dash Light Dimmer switch continually burning out 200 1990

Greetings,
Lost my thread on this...I have a 1990 with a dash lights rheostat that continuously fries...Verified Ground good in the Shift area, and all looks ok. A quick look at the wiring diagram seems futile. Advice on solution desired, beyond wiring it straight through, as I like them dimmed, just not off :-)
