A/C not very cold, Heat extremely hot. 200 1988

Hi, All

I have an '88 240DL wagon that has been having some A/C issues. During the summer, the A/C never gets very cool. I have to have the temperature lever all the way over to the coolest setting for the air to get cool at all, moving the temperature lever even just slightly to a warmer setting causes extremely hot air to blow out of the vents.

My A/C system has been tested and recharged and no leaks were found. My mechanic says everything is fine including the A/C compressor.

Any ideas?
