screenwash connections query 700 1989

Hi all
I had a poor response from my screen washers and replaced the pump and the two different types of non-return valve with new ones. All works splendidly with no delay and gives good pressure, although I removed a pipe and valve which I ouldn't understand. The removed valve is an air inlet valve, a clear plastic tee with non-return ball valves in two of its branches and a small upstanding plastic lug on one of them. The branches appear to be labelled 'P' 'S' and 'D'. There was a pipe from one branch to the open air, which is the one I have done away with.
The system is now connected as per the attached diagram. Can anybody please shed some light on the purpose of the air inlet valve- i.e. am i doing something wrong in not using it, and if so where should it be in the layout?
Thanks,
Thomas Mann
