Strange front brake sound 900 1993

I get a thumping sound from the left front brake of my '93 940 NA only upon hard braking. The sound is worse when going straight or turning left while braking (the sound disappears when turning right during braking). The pads and rotors are new. The car is a wagon with ABS and Girling calipers. Any ideas?
