760 Turbo emissions pump- do I need it? 700

My '84 760 turbo has an air pump mounted on the driver's side fender well under the hood. Recently it started staying on all of the time as opposed to the occaisional on/off cycle that it normally did. I unplugged the electrical connection from it so that it wouldn't keep running all of the time. Should I just remove it and plug the air line? I can get one from a parts car should I really need this thing in place, but I don't see why I couldn't pull it. I have two MGB's that came with the air pump ( belt driven) from the factory. Both pumps were removed before I got the cars however. On the Volvos, I've never seen this pump on a 240 or 740, just the 760's.

Thanks in advance.
Dave
