fuel level sending unit 700

The fuel gage on my '91 740 is acting up. It indicates more fuel than actually in the tank...it reads nearly full when I know from the mileage that the tank is only half full. This problem has gotten progressively worse in recent weeks/months.

I have read the FAQ section and searched this board...it seems that some of you have had success in adding Techron to the tank. I will try this, but I am not optimistic.

My question is this....is the fuel sending unit repairable? This unit is about $300 with my VCOA discount! I presume this price is for the entire assembly...sender, pump, etc. I will pay this, of course, but I wanted to investigate alternatives....when my climate control module went out a couple of years ago, a local independent repair shop sold me a rebuilt unit for half the price of new. I called them today, but no such deal exists for the sender.

Thank you in advance,
Jim Nau
