563 ECU - any equivalent/upgrade?

Having experienced the failure of a 0 280 000 563 ECU (LH 2.4, Turbo) within 2 days of purchasing my first 700 car (1990 780) I'm wondering if there's another ECU that is interchangeable and perhaps more reliable than the 563. I gather this is an issue of age of the component, not mileage, so I'm on borrowed time with the used ECU I got on Ebay - even if it was only $10... Any thoughts?
