OK, I dunno if many of you here in the 700 form know, but I've been looking for a VOlvo as a daily driver for a good 3-4 months now. I really want either a 700 or 200 series but it must have a 5 speed. TUrbos are ok, as long as they've been kept up.
Anyway, I found a decent lookin 88 740GLE in the local Regina, Saskatchewan newspaper. I called the owner who was a nice older guy who seems to have really taken care of the car well. When I asked him what his asking price was, I imagined that his car must be in mint shape for the 4700CAD he was asking, esp since the car also had about 130k miles (230kms).
While I was on my way to test driving this car, I imagined the nicest 740 sedan I had ever seen. Unfortunately this was not the case, obviously the owner had mistaken the value of his little 740, which was also an auto unfortunately.
During the test drive, I noticed that the radio stopped working all of a sudden, as well as the auto tranny was making the worst while I had ever heard!!! I thought the AW70 tranny's were supposed to be some of the best out there, but this obviously was not the case with this car. I asked the owner if he had ever taken the car for a tranny flush, and he said he did, within the past month. Then I thought the whine must have been a fluke, but when I replicated the speed and rate of acceleration (moderating the accelerator) I got the same noise!!! It happened right around 40-50KMS, and it was the most blood curdling noise I had ever heard, worse than nails on a chalk board!!!!!
Anyways, I was jsut wondering if you guys know what the prob. could be...Considering that I might end up getting stuck with an auto Volvo , even tho I really want a 4+OD or 5 speed.
Thanks in Advance\
